In medical terms known as Mastopexy, Breast lifts are meant to give you perkier and shapely breasts. With age and life-changing situations such as pregnancy, your body changes and breasts tend to lose elasticity. As a result, your breasts look saggy and misshapen. Breast lifts are procedures for bringing firmness back to your breasts and improving their shape. They also help improve your overall body proportions, leading to a slimmer and firmer body.
During a breast lifting, surgeons tighten the breast tissue around the nipples and under the breast area to raise their position. It enhances the symmetry of your breasts and makes them look fuller and perkier. Breast lifts can boost confidence in women with saggy busts due to aging, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy.
In a global survey conducted by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, a growth of 31.4% in breast procedures was seen in 2021. The Aesthetic Society reported over 160,000 breast procedures in 2021 and rated breast lifting as the 4th most performed surgery. Over 50,000 breast lift surgeries are performed in Turkey every year, which makes it a global hotspot for medical tourism. A staggering 1.2 million Europeans visit Turkey every year for various medical procedures. Here are all the details you need to know about how breast surgery works and how can you visit Turkey for this treatment.
A breast lift is a surgical procedure to lift and tighten the breast tissues for fuller and perkier-looking breasts. Surgeons uplift saggy breasts by removing the excess skin and tightening the skin tissues. The whole purpose of a breast lift is to rectify the position of the breasts on your chest so they look symmetrical and well-defined. Surgeons also lift the nipples as well to give them a higher and central position on each breast. Sometimes if breasts are excessively saggy, surgeons also place implants in breasts during a breast lift surgery.
The concept of breast lift was discovered in the early 1900s by Dr. Max Thorek, who also performed the first nipple graft. Due to medical advancement and surgical progress, breast treatment is now a quick and low-risk procedure. Here is everything a breast lift can do:

The average breast lift cost in Turkey is $2,500 to $5000 including hospital and travel expenses. On the contrary, the average cost of a breast in the US or Europe is $6000 to $12,000 excluding hospital and travel expenses.

Breast lift techniques may differ for each patient based on their situation, age, and medical history. Surgeons choose between 4 methods of making incisions according to how saggy the breasts are. There are 4 incision methods to lift the breast tissues during breast treatment. The incision methods include:
This method of breastlifting is more applicable to minor sagginess. Surgeons make a crescent-shaped incision on top of the nipple to adjust the position of the areolas. It helps lift saggy nipples and allows the breasts to look firmer and more symmetrical. It is a minimally invasive technique and is performed under local anesthesia.
Also known as circumareolar breast lift, this technique is suitable for women with slight nipple asymmetry or mild sagging. An incision is made around the areola to stretch the breast tissues upwards. If needed an implant is inserted to maximize the lifting effects. It is a minimally invasive method and is performed under local anesthesia. It is also a more common technique among women who look for a mild lift.
Known as the traditional method in breast lift, a vertical method is where surgeons make an incision around the areola and under the breast. Also known as a lollipop incision, surgeons also insert an implant if needed from the incision under the breast. This technique is ideal for women with low-hanging breasts or mild sagging and ones who want naturally lifted breasts.
Also known as an inverted T lift, this technique for breast lift is suitable for women who have significant sagging. As the name suggests, the incision is shaped like an anchor and extends from above the breast to the center and underneath the breasts. The sagging breast tissues are lifted, including the nipple, to tighten the breasts. This technique is more invasive because it requires a larger incision and more complex surgical procedures. However, it produces more noticeable and significant results compared to other methods.

The average recovery period of a breast lift lasts between 4 months and 6 months. Here is what you can expect during your recovery week by week:
After Surgery: After the surgery, you will be under the effects of anesthesia. These effects can take 24 to 48 hours to fully wear off. You will be kept under observation for 1 or 2 nights in the hospital. You will notice moderate to severe swelling and bruising on your breasts. You will also experience minor pain and soreness around the breast area that usually subsides after a week or two.
Week 1: You are sent back home after 2 nights in the hospital. You will be asked to rest profusely and consume a liquid diet in the first week. Your doctor will prescribe anti-pain medications for pain management at home. You can expect minor swelling and bruising. Doctors will most likely ask you to avoid home chores and heavy lifting for 2 weeks at least. By the end of the first week, you can expect the swelling and bruising to go down a bit. One of the breast lift recovery tips is to sleep on your back rather than on your side to avoid complications. Another crucial part of breast lift recovery is wearing a compression bra.
Week 2: By week 2, there will be a noticeable improvement in the swelling and bruising. You can go back to daily activities such as driving but are still asked to not lift anything heavy or do strenuous workouts during this period. You can switch to semi-solid foods from an all-liquid diet. You can walk as much as you want as long it is not too tiring for you.
Week 3: The swelling and bruising will be significantly less by week 3. The effects of the surgery may be more noticeable at this point. You can slowly go back to your daily routine including work and gym. You can also go back to your regular diet by the end of week 3.
After 4-6 months: This period is what we call long-term recovery. As long as stick to your doctor’s post-operation guidelines, your recovery will be visible. The scars begin to fade away and the outcome of the surgery is fully visible between 4 and 6 months.
Every surgical procedure has its pros and cons. Patients need to weigh all the pros and cons of breast lift surgery before opting for it:
Pros of breast lift | Cons of breast lift |
Attractive breast shape | Breast asymmetry |
No more saggy breasts | Breastfeeding issues |
Better nipple projection | Scarring (takes a year to fade) |
Tighter upper body | Anesthesia risks |
Improves body contours | Loss of sensation in the nipples |
Relieves back pain | Infections or accumulation of fluids |
Here are common queries about Breast Surgeries:
Most cosmetic procedures including breast lifts are not covered by insurance. It may only be covered in exceptional cases where the breast lift may be medically necessary.
A breast lift may relieve back pain to a certain extent but does not completely treat it.
Padded bras and other types of lingerie may help give your breasts a lifted look but it is a temporary solution.
Breast lift scars do not completely go away but may fade or lighten over time.
Most women go back to breastfeeding after a breast lift but it is advised not to get the procedure during and after pregnancy until you are breastfeeding.
It depends on your recovery but generally, you can drive after a week.
Any type of strenuous physical activity must be avoided in the first 3 weeks at least.
It completely depends on your needs. Breast lifts are meant to only change the shape whereas breast augmentation changes the size of breasts.
Breast lift surgery may cause slight pain but pain management is done through anesthesia and painkillers throughout the process.
Turkey is renowned all over the world for its thriving medical tourism sector. The safety of every patient is taken very seriously throughout their treatment. Here are the top reasons why Turkey is completely safe for cosmetic procedures.
Although certain risks are associated with both procedures, breast lift is still much safer than breast implants. Breast lifts involve making subcutaneous changes to the breasts to enhance their appearance whereas implants involve putting foreign material inside the breasts. The chances for allergic reactions and post-operative complications are much higher after a breast implant than a regular breast lift surgery without implants.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of a breast lift is approximately $5000 excluding hospital expenses. The average cost of a breast lift with an implant is around $9000 excluding hospital expenses. Insurance does not cover most aesthetic procedures such as breast lifts until they are necessary for the patient.
Breast Lift Surgery is a common aesthetic surgery and many people opt for it worldwide. There are, however, a few risks and complications associated with it being an invasive surgical procedure.
