Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty) in Turkey

Medically known as Platysmaplasty, a neck lift is a procedure to tone and slim down your neck region. The surgery removes signs of aging such as loose skin, wrinkles, double chin, and fatty jowls on the platysma region of the neck. Platysma is a flat muscle found on the chest, neck, and facial region. Factors such as aging, weight gain, and poor posture lead to the accumulation of fat and excessive skin in this region. Platysmaplasty or a neck lift is meant to fix these issues and give you a tight and chiseled neckline.

Neck lifts involve removing extra fat and skin from the neck region for a perfect and well-defined neck curve. As per the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, around 290,844 neck lift surgeries were performed in 2021. An eminent 15.7% increase was seen in neck lift surgeries throughout the world in recent years. Turkey ranks among the top 5 most advanced countries for medical tourism and healthcare. Approximately 15,000 neck lift surgeries are performed every year in Turkey and it continues to attract more patients every year.  Here is a detailed guide to this one-of-a-kind treatment and how you can plan your visit to Turkey for this treatment.

How is a neck lift done?

Platysmaplasty or neck lift is a procedure to tighten the muscles and remove excess fat from the neck region. Here’s how surgeons perform the neck lift procedure step by step:

Anesthesia: The first step in the procedure is anesthesia so that the patient is unconscious throughout the process. Surgeons either administer general anesthesia or local anesthesia as per the patient’s preference and comfort level.

Incisions: Once the patient is fully under the effect of anesthesia, the patient proceeds with the incision. Typically, a small incision (about 1 cm) is made under the chin in the center of the neck. Surgeons use fiberoptic telescopes with the keyhole technique to separate the muscles and fat. Liposuction is also performed at the same time if there is a lot of fat that needs extraction. After the removal of extra fat, surgeons remove the excess skin and gently stretch the underlying muscles, and close the incision.

Stitches: The last step is the closure of the incision with the help of stitches. The stitches are then covered by bandages to protect the area.

What is the neck lift cost?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of a neck lift is $5,774. This cost only covers the procedure and does not include hospital and medication expenses. Other expenses may include anesthesia fees, medical tests, post-surgery garments, medication costs, surgeon’s fees, and surgical facility costs.

Neck lift recovery: what to expect after the surgery?

Patients must follow the doctor’s instructions for neck lift surgery aftercare. The recovery timeframe differs from patient to patient according to their age, health, and lifestyle. Here is what you can expect week after week:

Week 1: The first week is crucial because you just went through surgery. You may find it hard to get used to the changes and adjustments needed for a stable recovery. Your doctor will probably put you on an all-liquid diet for 3-4 days to avoid complications. Although you can walk around in your house from time to time any drastic movements are prohibited. You will also be asked to clean the surgical site twice a day including changing the dressing and bandages. Smoking and alcohol can delay healing so doctors specifically ask patients to stay away from them at least for the first 2 weeks.

Week 2: The swelling does noticeably go down at this point in the recovery process. You can start to have normal food with semi-solid foods such as mashed vegetables, rice, pasta, etc. It is better to keep your diet lightweight and digestible at this point. The doctor asks you to come for your follow-up appointment right at the beginning of the week. Your stitches, if they are not the dissolvable kind, are removed at this point. Again, patients must stay away from smoking and alcohol. You can go back to work by the end of the second week and resume most of your everyday routine activities.

Week 3: Drastic improvement in the swelling may be seen by the third week. You can resume your everyday activities such as going to work and driving.

Week 4: Any swelling and pain subside by this time. You can go back to your regular life and may also start working out. It is important to ask your doctor before working out to avoid any mishaps.

4-6 months: The full results of the surgery start to appear after 4 to 5 months. Most patients are expected to be in a fully recovered state by the 6th month.
